Choosing Between VoIP Software and Hardware

VoIP phones can come in two variations: VoIP Software, and Hardware VoIP.  Nowadays, the use of VoIP is increasingly becoming more popular, since it is less expensive than ordinary telephone lines.  It works by converting analog signals into digital signals that can be transmitted over the Internet and decoded back again to analog signals for the call to be heard and understood.  Today, there are many VoIP service providers to choose from, and just as many options in getting a VoIP phone.

In choosing a VoIP phone, you can either get hardware-based VoIP or VoIP Software.  Both are considered as Voice Over IP Phones but they come with differences.  It is up to you to decide what suits you best, depending on your needs. 

Software-based VoIP

Software-based VoIP uses a program that is installed in your computer to transmit phone calls through the Internet.  This will allow you to place and receive calls with only the use of the software, a high-speed Internet connection, and a microphone and speaker system.

Hardware-based VoIP

Hardware-based VoIP, on the other hand makes use of specialized peripherals and devices connected to your high-speed Internet connection, to convert phone calls into digital signals. 

Choosing a Software-based VoIP

If you decide to get a software based VoIP phone, then you should consider some of these factors. 

The software should be able to support your Operating System.  If not, it might not function.  Check its compatibility.  Also, the phone software should be easy to use.  It should also support customizable skins, shared whiteboarding, and videoconferencing.

Choosing a Hardware-based VoIP

If you decide that getting a hardware based VoIP is better, then here are some factors you should consider.

Identify what connections your VoIP phone supports, and if it supports power over Ethernet, such as Wi-Fi, Dialup, or ISDN.  Also, it should be able to support videoconferencing and IPv6.  You should also ask yourself what suits your preferences more, whether you want the handset to be cordless or corded, or if you want it to have a headset in place of a handset.  Some added features can include: speakerphone ability, good LCD display, and more.  The style of the phone should also be considered.

As a whole, choosing the right VoIP phone really depends on your needs and what suits you more.  Each type, VoIP software or hardware comes with its advantages and disadvantages.  So, before buying one, ask yourself what you really need, and base your purchase from it, so you can buy something that gets you your money’s worth.
