The Pros and Cons of VoIP Phone Service
Before you make the big switch to VoIP phone service, make sure that you are aware of its advantages and disadvantages. Just as with any telephone service, the use of VoIP comes with pros and cons, and it is recommended that you weigh it for yourself and see if it’s worth pursuing.
Below is a list of some pros and cons of having VoIP phone service.
Pros
· Lower Monthly Fees
VoIP technology works by converting analog signals into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet, and decoded back to analog signals for the call to be heard and understood by the receiver. Because calls are placed and received through the Internet, price is then cheaper compared to regular phone service. Typically, a VoIP phone provider will charge you about $19.95 for unlimited incoming and long distance calls to anyone in Canada or the U.S. There are different packages and bundles available, all with competitive prices and rates, and it really depends on the service provider that you choose.
· More Features
Having VoIP will allow you to take advantage of many features that come with the price while regular phone companies will charge you an extra $20-$30. Some of these features include caller ID, call waiting (w/ or w/out name), speed dialing, call forwarding, free voicemail, speed dialing, videoconferencing, do-not-disturb, and many more. Usually, the number of features depends on its monthly fee, so if you want to enjoy most of these features, then be prepared to pay a higher price.
· Number Portability
A converter is usually sent by the service provider to allow regular phones to use VoIP services. So, for as long as an Internet connection is available, then you can carry the same number (which is stored in your converter) with you anywhere in the world.
Cons
· Emergency Service
Most service providers still do not offer emergency services, where you can dial 911. In this case, it is best if you still keep a cellphone or landline with you to be safe. However, if you plan to use your VoIP as a primary phone, then choose a service provider that already offers E911 services.
· Internet Connection
Since VoIP calls are transmitted over the Internet, you must have a high-speed Internet connection. Although there are talks about VoIP functioning on dial-up, voice clarity with high-speed connection is still a lot better. Therefore, you should consider investing in a fast Internet connection like broadband service.
So, those are just some of the pros and cons of having VoIP phone service. Remember, it is always best to do some research first before making a major decision such as this. Don’t forget to consider the advantages and disadvantages.
